The Canterbury Sports Awards finalists have been revealed today during an event at the Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub.
Sport Canterbury chief executive Julyan Falloon said the finalists demonstrate the diversity of sporting excellence in Canterbury.
“It’s easy to associate red and black and our regional pride with three or four sporting codes,” Falloon said.
“Ngā Puna Wai was a perfect setting to share our 2020 ORIX NZ finalists.

The 2020 E-Mega Store Canterbury Match Play Championships will take place this weekend at the famed Shirley LInks (Christchurch Golf Club) under a revised format and date change. Moved from Labour Weekend to avoid a clash with other tournaments, the championship also has new qualifying criteria where players were eligible to qualify for the championship brackets according to their placing at the recent Canterbury Strokeplay at Harewood.

A field of over 40 players enjoyed the Futures Junior Open event held at Rangiora Golf Club.
Twelve players aging in age from 5 to 12 enjoyed the 9 hole event played from the purple course. Scoring was very impressive with Selwyn Hub member Emma Harrison winning with 29 stableford points, one shot clear of fellow hub member Benji Willliams.
In the 18 hole event Lexi Thomson-Hall (Selwyn Hub) won the Girls Stableford with 39 points. Cooper Moore (Russley) won the U13 Boys gross with a 74 with Maadi Kirikiri (Christchurch) with the best stableford on 47 points from Louis Edwards (Avondale)...

Three amateurs have prevailed from 53 golfers (that included Canterbury players Matt McLean, Mike Toeke and Ryan Bellamy) at the final qualifying tournament for this week’s 101st New Zealand Open, presented by Sky Sport.
Jimmy Zheng and Adam Church both fired six-under par 66’s while McLean was the final player to finish, shooting a four-under 68 to snatch the third and final spot up for grabs at the Cromwell Golf Club.
Kazuma Kobori will also relish the opportunity to play the NZ Open after receiving an NZ Golf invitation.

The 2020 Captains Day Tournament was held at Avondale Golf Club on Friday in cool, overcast conditions with the course in excellent order.
A field of 40 Men and Women's Club Captains from around the Canterbury region competed for the Captains Trophy, playing a combined stableford competition. The scoring was very close with only 4 points separating the top 8 teams.

One of the largest fields in recent years played in the Arthur Chambers Memorial Tournament. The junior tournament, which this year was held at Burnham Golf Club, attracted a field of 40 players from around Canterbury.
Michael Visser (Russley) won the Arthur Chambers Memorial trophy for the lowest net score over the field, with a net 64. The runner up was Joseph Hall on a net 65. Leading the girls field both shooting a net 68 were Deanna Matthews (Weedons) and Jana Beneke (Kaiapoi).

Dominic Brettkelly was the toast of Hororata after he came from behind to win the Lamb & Hayward Canterbury Stroke Play Men’s Championship at Harewood 8-9 February. Back from the USA on a break from University, Dominic shot a final round 71 to beat Hayato Miya (Russley), Mike Toeke (Christchurch), and Josh Smith (Ashburton) by one shot, and win the title for the second time.
